cross-reference only to number of figure and table caption

Harry Lin

Hi, there,
In my document, I want to say , e.g. Figs. 2 and 3 instead
of Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. In this situation, I only want to
cross-reference the number of figure caption other than
the label and number. Unfortunately, Word XP dosen't
provides the function of inserting reference to only
number when referencing figure caption. How can I do this?
In the simple word, how can I only cross-reference the
number of figure caption? Thank you very much for your
help.

One way is to bookmark each caption number and then use
Insert>Cross-Reference, selecting "Bookmark" as
the "Reference type."

It's a bit fiddly, but it can be done. You must insert the cross-reference
first (this creates the bookmark). Then select just the caption label and
number and go to Insert | Bookmark. Make sure that "Hidden bookmarks" is
checked and the "Location" radio button selected. The bookmark that is
highlighted will be the one for the caption you have selected. Click on Add,
and the bookmark will be reapplied to just the label and number. Now go back
to your cross-reference and update it with F9.

What are the advantages of this procedure compared to
manual bookmarking?

Well, it reduces the total number of bookmarks in the document by avoiding
duplicate bookmarking.

That's a good point: when bookmarks are already present in
the document (the hidden bookmarks inserted automatically
by Word), it does make sense to use them, instead of
inserting new ones.

On the other hand, on a new document, I find it more easy
to use manual bookmarks. The main advantage of manual
bookmarks is that you can easily see them, assuming that
bookmark display is enabled in Tools>Options. To a certain
extent, it's a matter of personal preferences, I guess.
