cross reference page number

V

vijay J.

Hi all,

When I try to insert a cross reference to a page, I
select 'Numbered item' from the category "Reference
type ", and select 'Page number' from the
category "Insert reference to", but I don't get any
options in the box "For which numbered item", and the box
is totally blank, even if my document is page-numbered.
Can anyone help?
(Word 2000, Windows XP)

Thanks

Hi vijay

The cross-reference functionality in Word is designed to display the page
number on which a "something" appears. The "somethings" are listed in the
Reference Type box. That is, Word can display in your text the page number
on which a certain numbered item appears, or the page number on which a
particular bookmark, a table or footnote appear. It's not designed to let
you create a reference to, say, page 4. It's designed to let you create a
reference to a thing that is on page 4.

So, to have anything appear in the "For which numbered item" box, you have
to have numbered headings or other numbered items in the document.

As a quick test, create a paragraph. From the Styles box on the toolbar,
choose List Number (if it's not shown in the drop-down list, hold down Shift
when you click the arrow in the Styles box). Now, see if you can create a
cross-reference to that numbered item.

If you just want to refer to a particular spot in the text, select it and
create a bookmark using Insert > Bookmark. Then create the cross-reference
to the bookmark.

Hope this helps.
