cross reference to figure

Hi,
i have created a cross ref. to a fig. in the middle of a
paragraph.

Then, after going to page view/print preview, the cross
reference has jumped several lines down.

Going back to normal view, the extra lines created are
still there and the paragraph is split.

Any suggestions or explanations as to what i may be doing
wrong please?
