Cross-references fail with endnotes

I am writing a document that has some endnotes. Instead of duplicating some
endnotes I have cross-referenced them when I want to refer to the same
source of information. This works fine until I move up in the document and
add a new endnote. All the endnotes get renumbered appropriately but the
cross-references don't get changed. Is there something I am doing wrong?
Is this the best way to approach this?

Sounds like you are doing it right. The cross-references are fields but
they do not update automatically, you have to trigger it--if you hit F9 (the
UpdateFields) command, they should renumber properly.
