In a document with cross references (in brackets, but not hyperlinked) to
tables or figures, Word (2000) often places the open bracket where it should
be, but the cross reference and the closing bracket onto a new page, as soon
as the document is viewed in print preview, or printed. How can I prevent
this from happening?

Are you cross-referencing to Bookmarks or Captions?
It seems that somewhere in either the Bookmark or Caption you have included
a page break some how.
Have you turned on the Non-printing Characters (Ctrl+Shft+8) so you can see
what is included in the cross-reference. If you are using Bookmarks, turn on
the Bookmark square brackets (Tools, Options, View, Bookmarks) so you can see
exactly what is included in the Bookmark and will be repeated by the
cross-reference.
Hope this helps, come back is the problem persists.

Also, forgot to say that under Tools, Options, Print, the Update Fields box
is ticked. This refreshes all the fields in a document before printing and
preview.
