cross-references swallow text

hi, i hope this is a question that hasn't been asked over
and over again: when i use the insert cross-reference
function (mainly for references to example sentences, i'm
a linguist), everything seems to work fine. but whatever
follows the cross-reference seems to disappear once i save
and reopen the file. for instance: "as we see in (8),
there is no answer to the problem" -- (8) is the cross-
reference, pointing to a prior example. now, when i make
changes, say i type in some new words "as we saw in (8)
(a) -- a suggestion by Dowty (1991) -- there is no answer
to the problem", the new stuff disappears, but not right
away, but at some later point. what am i doing wrong?

not sure what the "(a) ..." means exactly, but could it be that you
happen to type within the crossreference-field itself? This would
explain things, whenever the field is updated later on, your new text in
there would vanish.

You might want to set field shading to on (always or when selected)
under Tools | Options | View: Field codes.
