Cross-referencing captions inserts previous figure as well (word2000)

Bruce Steven

Hi
I'm writing up my thesis and I'm putting the figures and
tables at the end of the document while I write the text.
When I cross ref a caption, (inserting label and number
only), the correct ref appears (ie Figure 4.1), but the
docuent is subsequently updated, the previous figure and
it's caption is also inserted in the text body as well.

My figures are inserted as inline objects and I ensure
that there are paragraph marks separating the image from
the caption and the next caption etc and that they are
normal style.

Any suggestions
Thanks
Bruce

If you have inserted the figure after creating the caption and the cross
reference, then your inclination is probably to press Enter at the beginning
of the caption paragraph to make a new paragraph for the figure. Whoops!
This inevitably puts your new paragraph inside the bookmark created when you
cross-referenced the caption. The usual workaround is to press Enter at the
end of the preceding paragraph instead, but if the preceding paragraph is
also a caption, then you could conceivably get the new paragraph inside that
bookmark, though if you've cross-referenced just the figure/table number,
there is less risk this way.

In any case, one way to correct the problem is as follows:

1. Select just the portion of the caption that you want cross-referenced.

2. Insert | Bookmark. Check the box for "Hidden bookmarks" and the radio
button for location.

3. You'll see a bookmark highlighted; that will be the bookmark for the
caption you have selected. Press Add, and the bookmark will be rewritten to
enclose just the portion you have selected.
