Cross Referencing

Hello
I'm editing a legal document with cross references most of which work fine.
However when I went in an edited cross reference Section 9.2 to Section
9.2(c) the numbering changed to read 5.4(c). However, when I control clicked
on the incorrect 5.4(c) it linked to the correct 9.2(c).

It seems that whatever cross references I try to modify it will change to
some combination of 5.4 yet will still take me to the correct linked section
in the document.

Is there a way around this without going back and manually editing the cross
reference name?

Word automatic cross-references make use of hidden bookmarks, which will
expand if you add text (or press Enter) at the beginning of a
cross-referenced paragraph. The trick is to press Enter at the end of the
previous paragraph instead, and then type the text you want to add. You can
then "merge" the paragraphs, if necessary, by deleting the paragraph mark
you just inserted.

To fix an existing cross-reference that points to an incorrect item, you can
delete the cross-reference and reinsert it.

Thanks for your response Stefan. I added an additional enter to the previous
paragraph and then went to the existing cross reference 5.6 and edited it to
5.6(a).

As before the x-ref is pointing to the correct place, however the cross
reference text now reads 5.4(a) instead of 5.6(a).

I also tried deleting the existing cross reference and re-entering it. Same
thing.

Any suggestions?

You cannot edit the cross-reference directly, since it is using a field (a
REF field in particular) to display its result. You should be able to delete
it, though, and then reinsert it via the Cross-reference dialog box.

Alternatively, you can redefine the hidden bookmark (this must be done for
each problematic cross-reference/bookmark): Select the paragraph that should
be bookmarked. Then open the Bookmark dialog box. Make sure to check the
"Hidden bookmarks" option. At "Sort by," click "Location." In the list of
bookmarks, the name of the bookmark at the insertion point will be
highlighted. Click Add to redefine the bookmark. When you are done, update
the cross-references, for example by switching to Print Preview and back.
