Crossreference field randomly inserts page breaks

When self-updating, crossreference fields are inserted into a document using
the crossreference button, Word2007 has a habit of randomly inserting page
breaks at the site of the crossreference field. The page breaks can usually
be deleted without disturbing the formatting of the neighbouring text, but
they sometimes reappear.

Any suggestions

Cross-references in Word are REF fields, which make use of hidden bookmarks
in the text. The problem with bookmarks is that if you add text, or a page
break for that matter, at the beginning of a bookmarked paragraph, the
bookmark will expand to include the added contents. This is likely to
explain what you are seeing. To work around this, avoid manual page breaks
in your document. Instead, use "Page break before" formatting (Paragraph
dialog box) whenever you need a page break. Updating the cross-reference
fields should then work just fine.
