Cube rebuild message never shows cube rebuild completed

W

wacNTN

On the Manage Enterprise Features page, it shows The cube building process
was initiated on date at time but never changes to cube rebuilt successfully.

The DBA can go in to Analysis Manager and rebuild the dimensions and cubes
successfully but this message does not update. If I then execute an update
immediately, the date and time change but it never comes back (even after
refreshing the page) to show the cube rebuild is completed.

The resource availability data in the Portfolio Analyzer never updates either.

Help!

WAC:

The most likely cause is that the WSS Admin account you're using for COM+ is
not setup correctly. Either it doesn't have the necessary permissions or it
has become disabled. When you use the build now feature, your logon
credentials are used. If you're a domain admin, this should work. If you're
not a domain admin, your account also needs the correct credentials.

Gary,

It was working fine. We restarted the server at 12 am 3/31. Is it
possible that the necessary account didn't login automatically?

How do I check this?

I meant to say OLAP Admin account in the previous post. I hope you figured
that out. I guess I had your previous question on my brain.<g>

Anything is possible. Was this working at one point? Do you have passwords
set to expire by default or by policy? To check the status of an account, go
to Active Directory.

Gary,

This was working fine until recently.

What would be the out of the box name of the OLAP Admin account? The
password could have expired. I will have them check.

Gary,

There is a group called OLAP Administrators and it has only one member. He
is the system administrator and his account is not locked. Should there be
additional accounts in the group and if so what would / should they be?

If I may interject on this thread... have you checked the settings in the
COM+ settings tool (PSCOMPlus.exe) to see the account you are using as the
analysis services administrator. This account will need to be a member of
the OLAP Administrators group that you mention.

Walter:

The fact that there is only one member, a real person, indicates that the
person mentioned may have been the one to perform the installation and used
his own account rather than following directions and creating the proper
service account. In this case, the sloppy short cut bites you in the ass
when your password expires. If your environment is semi-secure, even system
admins change their passwords periodically. The password change would cause
the sudden failure.

Interjectors welcome!

PSCOMPlus.exe doesn't have any account shown. How do we find the account?

Gary,

PSCOMPlus doesn't display an account.

How do we fix this problem if the account wasn't setup correctly during the
install?

Sounds like an account may never have been created during the installation.
Go back to the installation guide. One of the first steps in it is to
create necessary accounts and assign them to requisite groups. Then at the
end of the installation guide there are steps informing you how to use the
COM+ settings tool to finish installation steps skipped during the
installation process.

Walter:

John M. gave you the correct answer. Use the COM+ tool as described in the
installation guide.

You just need to know where to look:

1) you mentioned that you could launch the cube process fom PWA and it
starts but never ends right?
This means your webserver with the PWA Front End is runnign the program on
the web server.
2) you mentioned that some DBA could build the cube on the OLAP/AS server
and it finishes fine right?

3) The solution is right in front of you... but you have to know where to
look.

I will write out one scenario try idea to your model that fits, ok?

Server #1 has:
Main MSPS Install and WSS

Server #2 has:
views & session and SQL-AS aka OLAP thingy

Server #3 has SQL

Check the event viewer logs and you will most likely see that on Server 2
there are login failures, Check to see that on this server the ID it's
failing with is in the OLAP Admin local group. Then open SQL-AS and expand
the current cube so you can see the "roles" sub group. Then make sure the
account you mention is in the SQL Group profile settings just under the Cubes
and that all it has access to all the cubes.

** Most of the time this hapens when someone logs in as local admin to do
the install when MSPS really should use a service account to run the whole
thing.

Good luck .
