Cube Update Failure

Hello, I'm having problems with refreshing the cube. We have been using the
cube for a year and refreshing it every day. Sometimes it get stuck and won't
refresh on it's own and it either requires restarting services on the Project
Sever Sharepoint Server or restarting the server. Now when I try to refresh I
get the error below:

Current Cube Status
The cube scheduled to be built on 4/1/2008 at 12:07 PM failed.
(0) Thread was being aborted.

This is the first time this has occurred. I've restarted the server twice
now but not the SQL server portion. Can someone suggest how I might go about
trouble shooting this? Thanks

This is Project Server 2003 correct. Have you recently installed any Service
pack for SQL Server?

Yes, this is Project Server 2003 and we have not installed any service packs
to my knowledge.

Thanks for the response. I have tried the recommendation before of restarting
the service. Up till this week it would always take care of it. It doesn't
seem to help this issue.

One thing to note when I look at the vwnotify.exe in the processes most
times it shows 0% CPU usage except during the restart of the notification
service then when fully restarted it goes back to 0%. The memory allocation
is 47.800K

Hello Gary, here's the new error message that started appearing in the event
log for source QPM Cube Extension.

Error encountered while building the dimension 'Task Enterprise Text'. The
cube structure may be invalid: System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread
was being aborted.

Gary, we have made no changes to the custom fields for a few months. Below
are all the errors with time stamps by each one along with the log listing
below that group. I clicked on the cube manual refresh at about 4:02PM. the
errors started at 4:11. The cube status message came back failed at 4:32.
Additional errors showed up in the log immediately following that. I hope
this detail makes sense. Thanks

Doug:

Well the first series indicates bad email addresses in your resource pool.
This could also indicate some sloppiness in maintaining resource data. Are
you certain that the resouce pools contains no resources with special
characters in their names? Do any of your custom enterprise fields contain
illegal characters? These can cause the cube build to choke in the way it's
failing on your system. Another thing I notice is that you're trying to
build resource availability for fourteen years. Do you need to extend the
data this far? Does shortening the time period of the cube build change the
behavior?

Thanks for the reply. I have removed all former staff members email addresses
and domain names. I have also made them inactive. We have used - is email
names in the past but don't currently have any. With regard to the custom
field we do have the following characters in the names - + / These have
been in the field names for many months without issues. You mention that it's
building resource availability for 14 years. I'm not sure where this is set.
On the "Update resource tables and OLAP cube" page we had set the "Date range
for resource availability" for 4 months into the future and 4 weeks into the
past. I have set that down to 3 months future and 2 weeks past. With all
these changes I'm still getting failure. Do you think renaming the custom
fields at this point would make a difference given that it has worked for
months with them? Could there be some issues with the SQL database that I
need to check?

Doug:

When you include the special characters, you're entering a game of Russian
Roulette. It's simply a matter of how many bullets your chamber holds! I
suggest that you remove all of the offending fields from the cube, then
recreate the custom fields without the special characters in the names and
the values, then reassign the values to your projects, resources, and tasks,
and finally add the custom fields back to your cube configuration.

Oh boy Gary. We have these custom fields so integrated into our daily
workings that I'm not able to do this not without exhausting every other
possibility. Do you think it is a good alternative to start by renaming all
these fields and removing the special characters? I could do that.

I removed all special characters from the field names. It did not give me a
failed message this time I just got stuck saying the cube is being rebuilt. I
l looked at the application event viewer and there were 4 errors. I copied
them below. Does this give you any ideas?

My guess would be that we either have some data corruption or a problem with
the identity that you're using in COM+. Can you verify that the account is
enabled, the password hasn't changed and that the account is not expired?
Check in component services and determine whether the COM object is running.
You may need to reset the identity. Also, did you remove the special
characters from the value lists in the custom fields?
