CUp running at 100%

My wifes PC shows that the CPU usage is 100% when
she opens a certain document. I have checked it with
avg and found nothing also adware finds nothing. As
this heats up the CPU I am very concerned that it
will burn up!! The Word document has 35 pages, mostly of text with a few
copied & pasted Excel columns of info too. I'm just thinking it might be
happening with all new Word docs., it certainly doesn't happen with any old
ones. Could that new document have something in it that is causing my
computer to access the Internet when it is open, perhaps a Trojan Horse?
Kind regards

More likely this is a corrupt document. Presuming you have a recent version
of Word (you didn't give us that vital piece of information), use the Open
and Repair option. (Open and Repair is one of the choices under the little
arrow key to the right of the OPEN button in the File, Open dialog.)

100% use...
had same problem in all programs, ie as soon as pc was switched on it
went to 100%.
ran about 4 different cleaners and virus scans - no joy, then I ran
"SUPERantispyware" with all ticks off, after about 5 hours it picked
inter alia a registry related bug, I wiped all "items" and my problem
was gone.

Hi TF
It's Word 2000 and it doesn't seem to have the Open & Repair a file option
unfortunately, although it does have a Repair section under Help but I think
that's for the whole programme. Thanks, anyway. I've split the document up
into smaller chunks and isolated the offending bit (unfortunately still quite
a large "bit" so far - might have to split that into even smaller files).
I'm thinking it might have something to do with a strange event last week
whilst adding to the document, the font suddenly changed to red and I
couldn't get it back to black no matter what I did. I eventually copied and
pasted the whole content into a new document which got rid of the "red font"
problem. I thought I'd hit a "fast key" on the keyboard but on checking that
out I've found no fast key(s) are allocated to change font colour. I'm now
wondering if I somehow activated "Track changes" which changes the font
colour and puts a line in the margin (exactly what happened). Again, I don't
know how a keyboard can activate that.
Any further thoughts gratefully received.

You are possibly correct that you may have unintentionally toggled on Track
Changes as it would certainly explain your symptoms. I'm fairly sure that
Ctrl+Shft+E will toggle on Track Changes.

Unfortunately Open & Repair wasn't introduced until Word XP (it is a very
powerful tool). But you are going about the correct way to find your
corruption by gradually segregating the document parts until you find it.

Next time, instead of copy/paste, open a new blank and use Insert, File:
that sometimes gets you into a corrupt document.
