Current Completion date

Hi!

I have baseline and current bars. One of acitivities is in progress. When I
want to update that activity I put %completion. Planned %completion at this
moment should be 5%. The thing is when I put 25% or 75% it gives the same
completion date? I think completion date should be diffrent when put 75% then
when I put 25%. Am I right?

Thanks.

Not neccessarily. Project will not reschedule work unless you tell it
to. After you tell the software that a task is a certain %Complete,
then you have to tell Project to reschedule the work based on that new
information. If you're using the Tracking Toolbar, there's an icon
that does exactly that. It's also under "Tools, Tracking, Reschedule
Work".

Hope this helps in your world.

problem.

Thanks.

Hello Stevan,

I'm not sure I follow what you mean by "it gives the same completion date."
Do you mean that when you enter a percent complete you are seeing the same
completion date as the planned (baseline) completion date. If so, that is
normal Project behavior. Percent complete is a *duration* measure. So, if
you have a task initially set with a 5 day duration and you enter 20%
complete, Project will assume that you have completed 20% of the duration (1
day) and have 80% of the duration (4 days left). If you wish to see the
projected end date change, modify the remaining duration, which will also
modify your % complete. For example, if after 1 day of working you estimate
that you only have 3 days left, update the remaining duration. Project will
project the new end date.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks a lot.

Ok, this is what is happening: when I have activity which is behind schedule
and when I put %completion and do reschedule it moves projected completion
date later which is correct, but when I have activity which is ahead of
schedule and when I put %completion and do reschedule it does not move
projected date earlier and that is my problem.

Hello Stevan,

The problem with using % complete is, as I noted, a duration
measurement. If you have accomplished more of the task (you have a
higher % complete) in the same time as was originally planned you cannot
change solely the % complete. If you originally planned the task to
take 4 days (Monday through Thursday) and after 2 days (Tuesday) you are
75% complete (you should only be 50%), change the remaining duration to
1 day -- Project will re-project the new finish date to one day earlier.

You may want to also look into using Physical % Complete or tracking at
a more detailed level using Actual Work in one of the timescaled
(Resource Usage or Task Usage) views.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant as you said if you are 75% complete
remaining duration is 1 day and MS project after reschedule should re-project
new completion date one day earlier. But I found that MS Project is still
showing same finish date and I don't know why?MS project doesn't move finish
date one day earlier! I don't know why?

Hello Stevan,

Are you *manually* changing the remaining duration to 1 day? Instead of
guessing, if you would like, zip the file and email it to me. I'll take
a look and see if I can see anything amiss.
