Cursor becomes double or becomes bar code. How do I stop this?

The server on our network has this problem. From time to time the arrow
pointer becomes doubled (separated by almost a centimetre). Today it became
what looked like a barcode. Rebooting fixes it but to do this the whole
network has to shut down so I would like to fix it. Thanks for any help.

Perhaps you're seeing the "Click and type" icons? Disable this feature on
the Edit tab of Tools | Options.
