Cursor changes to clock and and stays that way

When using graphics in a Word document, my cursor frequently changes
to a clock icon and then remains that way, even if I close the
document and reopen it.

Other annoying things happen as well. For example, when copying and
pasting a series of text boxes to be attached to different paragraphs.
Most recently, command C causes the selected text box to change font
sizes rather than to go to the clipboard. Strange! Then changes the
outline box to something very weird (like a fuzzy caterpillar) when
deselected.
