cursor disappears

If I'm working in Word, and I switch to another window for a moment or two, when I return to what I was working on in Word, the cursor has vanished. I can still carry on, but it is tricky without seeing the cursor. Do you have any tips? Thanks.

I don't have any tips, but I'm seeing the same phenomenon. I don't even have to switch documents. The cursor simply vanishes as I'm typing a line. I can type a couple of blank spaces or hit return and have no idea where the type is going to appear next. This has become enough of a problem that I'm no longer using Word as the primary word processor.

I should add:
Running OSX 10.5.6
Power PC G5 (but it's also occurring on a Powerbook G4 running same OS)
Not running Spaces.
This phenomenon did not occur on either of those machines with Word 2004 under Leopard.
I note that I can make the cursor appear sometimes by hitting a down or up arrow key. But if I type after that it will disappear again. This is, as someone else said elsewhere, making it extremely difficult to work in Word on documents of any length.

Are you using the OS X feature called Spaces? It is a known issue that
Spaces & Office 2008 do not play nicely together.

If you're not trying to run Office with Spaces make sure you have all
updates to OS X (10.5.6) & Office (12.1.5) applied, repair disk permissions,
restart you Mac & see if things improve.

Should they not get better there may be some other steps to take so post
back with complete details including specs of your Mac.

I have tried the above common sense tips and this still occurs. I do use Spaces, all the time, it's one of the best features of Mac OS X. I find using Word for Mac incredibly frustrating, as the cursor seems to follow me around, whichever space I'm in. To get it back into my Word document I have to move the document into the space I was last in... very tedious.

I'd be interested to hear any of the "other steps" you mention above. I have left feedback through Word 2008.

Sorry, but that's why I asked the question right up front. Assuming that the
use of Spaces is the cause of the problem there are no other steps to be
taken. The windowing mechanism which Apple used for Spaces conflicts with
that for which Office 2008 was designed. There is nothing that can be done.

there is no coherence between the usage of spaces and the disappearing
text cursor in office 2008. do have different achines over here, none
of it has spaces activated. it is a new issue since update 7

OK, please provide a full description of the issue you are seeing and
instructions for how to reproduce it.

That sounds like a new and different issue.

Word 2008 with the 12.1.7 patch applied should work fine with Spaces
disabled. With the latest Apple patch applied, it should also work with
Spaces enabled, although I have not tried it (I don't run OS 10.5)

Cheers
