When typing in word my cursor often jumps back several lines I have done the
fix and rebuild and there is no change.

Are you using a laptop computer? The usual cause is accidentally brushing an
oversensitive Touchpad. If you go to the setup for the touchpad, you can
either desensitise the touchpad, or their should be an option to turn off
the 'tap to simulate mouse click' option.

None that I am aware of. I take it that you have a conventional PC without a
mouse and no touchpad at all?

Ralph,

What was the fix and rebuild you spoke of. I have 2 laptops that both have
that problem. The touch pads are turned off on both of them.

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks Terry...this solved my problem. I had to first go to HP download site
and get the ALPs Touchpad drivers download. Then I went to the mouse
properties and click other device, and there it was! I disabled it and the
jumping cursor that had been driving me crazy, especially with e-mails is
fixed....yeah! It took me hours but oh it was so well worth it...

Some of us not using touchpads need a reply to this annoying problem.
My IBM Thinkpad has done this from day one.
It can result in text being lost if an eye is not kept constantly on the
screen.

This jumping occurs also outside of Word. E.g. if I go to the Vanguard
mutual funds site and scroll down, the screen will scroll back up
automatically unless I hold it down by depressing the down arrow key.

It doesn't seem to be a Word problem if it is happening in a different
application. My wife's ThinkPad doesn't have a touchpad: it has a point
stick but she uses a mouse. She doesn't have any problem with the cursor
moving to the top of the screen either. I think it is more likely to be a
problem with the mouse driver. Have you checked the you have the latest
driver for it? Have you tried different settings for the mouse? I'm thinking
that perhaps there's a problem with specific program settings or the
'Automatically move the pointer to the default button' or maybe the 'Enhance
Pinter Precision' settings - something along those lines.

I see this problem is prevalent. (I've been nagging Best Buy about it, and
they said they never heard of such a thing. ) Can you tell me exactly where
to find the setup for touchpad. I am using XP and see no mention of the word
touchpad in the Control Panel. Thanks.
