Cursor keeps flickering

I am running Word 2003 under Vista.
Since recently, whenever I open Word, the cursor keeps flickering
(turning into a flickering hourglass). Very annoying. I never had this
problem before.
Can it have something to do with some recent Vista update? Any remedy?

No advice yet? I'm still going crazy about that constantly flickering
hourglass on the screen, whenever I start Word (or any Word document)
No problem with any other application
