Cursor not returning to the left

From what I remember, tell me if I'm wrong, when I would have a piece of
text I wanted centered, I would align center that text, and hit return and
the cursor would go to the left (or left alignment) on next line.

For some reason, it seems to stay on the center alignment after hitting
return. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Kevs-

Your memory must be playing a trick on you! Center Alignment is a paragraph
formatting attribute, so when you apply it and press [Enter] the formatting
carries to the next paragraph just like font, font size, etc. Has been that
way as far back as I can remember.

One thing that will make a difference is if you are dealing with linked
Styles. When you press [Enter] after applying a paragraph style the linked
style is applied automatically to the next paragraph. If the 1st style calls
for center alignment but the 2nd does not the new paragraph will be
formatted accordingly.

Assuming you are referring to manually formatting and not using styles,
Kevs, that hasn't been my experience. Word will retain the changes you've
made to the formatting of a paragraph when you hit the Return key.

To align as you say, do either of these:

* After keying Return after your centre-aligned txt, key Command-l <== "L"
to left-align the new paragraph.

* Or before centre-aligning the paragraph, press Return again to create the
following (left-aligned) paragraph, then up-arrow and Command-e to centre
the paragraph above it.

Post back if you want me to say how it would work with styles.

Thanks Clive /Cyber.
Cyber you are right!

Usually, I immediately would select a style and align it center, and then
return and see cursor go left. (because that is in the style to do that).

But I started doing something new -- putting text in center without the
style. --threw me off.
