Cursor not working on WORD documents

All of a sudden, my CURSOR will not work on newly
created/saved WORD documents. The cursor will
not "activate"--I press the left button on the mouse and
nothing happens. The vertical bar on the text page can be
moved up and down and side-to-side by using the ARROW keys
and I can enter text but the cursor will not work.

And the "book" at the bottom task bar just keeps "flipping
pages".

Can you help me ?
