Cursor problems

All of a sudden, my cursor is behaving strangely. Instead of the "I" bar
cursor, I have a black box. When I put the cursor in a word, It selects a
character. The arrow keys just move to box to a different character. I don't
know what I did, but I'd sure like to undo it!

I am using a laptop, and there's no obvious insert key to hit to begin with.
In order to hit the insert key, you have to simultaneously hold down the
Function, Shift, and "M" keys. It took me a while to figure that out, as the
function designations are in a very faint blue on the edge of the keys. How I
managed to hit that key combination by accident in the first place is the
great mystery!
