Cursor skipping erratically

In Word 2003 I'm finding the cursor skips erratically from where I need it to
be to someplace earlier in the document. This happens erratically as
well...most of the time but not always. It happens whenw I'm composing e
mails or working on any regular document.
sometimes it simply seems to disappear and is hard to locate, but I usually
find it several lines above where I'm typing. Is anyone familiar with this
problem? It's a royal pain and usually requires that I reconstruct whole
sentences because I type rather quickly and have usually screwed up several
sentences before I notice.

You are hitting the touchpad accidentally. Suggest you buy a USB mouse and
disable the touchpad.

As Rae suggests, a mouse is the best solution but not always practical.
Depending on the touchpad software, you should be able to change its
settings (normally through the Control Panel). Try desensitizing the
touchpad and if that fails, disable the double-click feature.
