Cursor suddenly jumps to first page

Using page up/page down or scroll bar near the end of a medium-size document
often bounces me back to the first page of the document. For example, I'm on
page 35 of a 42 page document, hit page up once, and *wham* -- I'm on page 1.

Any ideas?

I'm running Word 2003, and this has now happened in two different documents
that were created from different templates.

Nothing unusual is displayed in the document at this "magic spot." From the
"magic spot" (in a Heading 4 paragraph) if I press the "right arrow" key to
advance one character, the cursor jumps to a diagram on the previous page. If
I advance one more character to the right, the cursor jumps to the first page.

I know some junk is at the position of the "magic spot" because if I try to
create a cross reference, there are many entries for "1.1.1.1" for which no
visible text exists, and the style "Heading 4" has over 700 instances (of
which only 9 are valid).

Any hints on how to delete invisible junk (that won't show even when hidden
text is displayed, either) would be appreciated.

Anne:

I use show/hide all the time, but it's not showing me anything I don't
already know about.

I think the bad behavior has to do with bread crumbs left by change
tracking, because after I approved all changes in the document, the problem
didn't go away, but it improved.
