Cursor turns into hourglass every 8 seconds.

The problem occured in Office 2000, changed to 2003 and it is still there.
The corsor (railroad track) is substituted by the hourglass (busy) every 7-8
seconds) If entering characters the entry is interrupted until the hourglass
disappears (approx 1 sec.). The only other place this phenomenon occurs is in
Outlook Express, not as pronounced and does not disturb using the program.
It looks like an electrical interruption or lightning strike. I've checked
the power supply and it seems to be OK, but, I don't really know how to check
it, then again, it does not affect any other program I have. Only Word.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Test to see if it is the spelling/grammar checker doing this by going to
Tools, Options, Spelling and Grammar tab and clear the check boxes for Check
Spelling and Grammar whilst you Type options.

In that case make sure that Speech Recognition is not active and that the
hour glass isn't popping up at the timed interval set for AutoRecovery.

Terry, Thank you again. Your prompt replies encourage me to think that there
is a soloution out there. As you can prpbaly tell, I'm not in any way a
computer aficiaonado, rather a researcher and letter writer.
I tried the Speech recognition and found that my VOIP (Skype) phone is
listed under USE THIS AUDIO DEVICE as ell as Sound Max digital Auto. I have
selected both of them, in turn, and they have no affect. I am stumped by AUTO
RECOVERY, I don't know where to look.

AutoRecovery is under Tools, Options, Save Tab.

Terry;
Sorry to bother you. I checked to see if there was a problem with the
cursor, went to mouse on the control panel and when I checked on the arrow
icon I got a message which I don't understand, perhaps I have a virus..... A
message pops up and reads " The C:\Program Files\Fun Web
Products\shared\0030072A.dat file, which contains "Normal Select" cursor, is
either missing or corrupt," FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER SEEN A MESSAGE SUCH AS
THIS..... I checked FIND and I can find no trace of Fun Web Products. Do you
think this may be the cause, I'm not at all sure what to do next. I know I'm
being a pest, I'll understand if you don't have time or the inclination to
answer. Don

Terry;
Thank you so much for your help. As a graduate marine engineer I always
listen to and put my hands on the engine. I can tell a lot by doing that. In
this case I'm lost, it takes a lot of convincing that the problem could be in
a program. While waiting for your latest reply I used what little deduction I
have left. The pointernhas a problem, when I check the pointer I got the
message I sent you, I need to fix the pointer, how to do that, I thought
about reloading the mouse software, I checked for updates and there was one.
I downloaded it and EVERYTHING WORKS FINE. (I'm going to stop here and go
back to Word and check it once again) Intuition, I guess, before I wrote this
msg. it worked, now I'm getting the same hourglass for the same 7 sec. delay.
Oh well, it's been an interesting experience with a few ups and downs, I'll
wait for another day. Let me know if you think of anything and thank you
again. Don

Did anyone get an answer to this? It's happening with my Word 2003, too, and
it's taking me forever to get my work done. Thank you!

I did get an answer to this problem from my campus Office of Internet
Technology. I threw away the normal.dat document and restarted Word to create
a new normal.doc. It's totally fine now!

I am having the same problem with a just installed version of Word 2007 on
one computer and none of the solutions that were suggested here worked for
me. Wha t is causing this to happen?

I had this problem and went through Microsoft support to help solve it. After
trying many things, the final solution was to go to Options in the Tools menu
and uncheck almost everything like Background Save, Smart Tags etc. I'm not
sure which one improved the situation but the problem is gone and I'm happy
again. Give it a try.

The normal reason is you have a networked or wireless printer and Word
cannot see it correctly. Word must be able to see a locally installed
printer driver set as the Windows default printer. Either delete and
reinstall the printer or change to a locally installed printer. (Make sure
that the driver is the latest available.)
