Cursoring Across a Page Break

In Word 2007, in compatibility mode (.doc). When I put a hard page break in a
document and attempt to use the up and down cursor arrow keys to move up and
down through the document, the cursor stops at the page break. I can cross
the page break using the right and left arrow keys, but the cursor backs up a
line or two and I have to wait for it to cursor across those lines. If I am
moving down in the document and come to the stop point before the page break
and then press the left arrow key, it moves the cursor all the way to the top
of the visible page, and I have to start moving the cursor again. Any idea
why this is happening and how to get the cursor just to go across a page
break?

I am using Windows XP on this machine, but have a newer laptop with Windows
Vista, and the same thing happens in similar documents.

Hi Dan,

I know this isn't going to sound very helpful, but I don't see any
such behavior. Using the down arrow key, my cursor passes right
through a manual page break without stopping.

Can you isolate anything else about these documents, besides
compatibility mode and hard page breaks? Were the documents created in
Word 2007 or in an earlier version? In which program version did you
insert the page breaks? Are you running any add-ins? (In Word Options,
on the Add-ins tab, look at the lists for both COM add-ins and Word
add-ins in the Manage box.)

These are mostly new documents, but were created in compatibility mode, which
is what I have to use until my clients make the switch. They are mostly
resumes, and there is usually a new style at the top of the next page (Page 2
heading). I have not noticed the problem with longer documents in which there
is not the combination of page break and new style at the top. If there's a
way to do so, I can let you have an sample document with that behavior and
see if it happens with your software.

Here's a better idea: Delete the page break. In the first paragraph
that should be on the next page, right-click and choose Paragraph to
get the paragraph formatting dialog, click the Line & Page Breaks tab,
and check the "Page break before" box. See if that solves the problem.

If that particular style should always start a new page, you can add
the "Page break before" to the definition of the style.
