Custom Animation, Actual Operation

I am using PowerPoint 2000 Version 9.0.6620, and I know that there have been
substantial problems with this version. However, I'm encountering one that
is new to me. I can set up Custom Animation, audition it in the Animation
Preview, but when I run the slide show, the animation activates improperly.
Such as: Text simply appears rather than spinning in, or a title with appear
with a single "snap" rather than fly in as "Typewritten". Sound effects that
were set up in Custom Animation are heard as set. Though I use PowerPoint a
fair amount, I don't utilize animation very often. Anyone have any ideas?

Can't be exact on that. There are probably several factors.
Animations are often lagging for slower computers, try pressing Backspace to
rewind the animation and then press Enter to see if the animation run
properly.
See if enabling hardware acceleration helps:

For Type writer animation, does it work properly in Autopreview mode? It
could probably be the cause of % delay between letters in the effect options.
In this case, set the % to around 50.
