Custom animation - advanced timeline 2007

Martin Conradi

I have been using the advanced timeline on a heavily animated presentation
for some weeks. As I drag the orange box right or left, the box moves and the
start time continually updates so it is quick, easy and accurate to use.
Great.

But it has suddenly stopped doing this. The box no longer moves (only the
arrow moves) and the numbers have stopped appearing. Once I stop moving the
arrow the box jumps into its new position, but it is impossible to set this
with any accuracy.. If I move the cursor away from the box and then over it
again, only then do the values reappear - but disappear as soon as I drag
the box once more. This is happening on 2 different computers and on other
presentations too.

So animations suddenly require a lot of guesswork and trial and error.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do or undo?

Thanks.

I've not noticed anything like this, but most of my animations aren't that
involved.

Since it's happening on 2 different computers, and on other presentations,
it sounds like a bug. If you want to send me a sample slide or two, I can
see if it repros here and report it if so. The email is echos at indy dot
net.

I'm sure you know you can double-click or right-click an animation in the
timeline to get to the Timing tab, where you can input delay times. (But I
agree that isn't a great way to go about doing what you're describing.
Dragging on a visual timeline is soooo much easier!)

Thanks Echo.

On a trying a third computer there is no sign of the problem. Both my
problem machines (on my desk and at home - the ones I really need!) are XP
running 2007 and 2003. One has SP1, the other doesn't. There are some 80
slides in the presentation (a rolling display for a doctor's waiting room)
but the problem is now consistent - on PPT and PPTX, on long or short or new
presentations. Something seems to have triggered it but I cannot for the
life of me think what.

Any suggestions welcome!

I haven't tried to repro yet, but it's starting to sound computer-specific.

I'd look at the two problem systems. What add-ins are installed on them?

Does changing hardware acceleration help?

One computer has HOW, PFCPro2007, Swiff and YouTubeVideo2k7; the other has
none of these. Changing hardware acceleration makes no difference. The odd
thing is that this problem arose while working on the file with no recent
changes to either computer... except for getting an itouch (glory of
glories!) and so starting to use itunes and its sync functions a couple of
weeks before.

However since writing the above, the problem has corrected itself on my
office computer - leaving me (and I dare say you) none the wiser! The only
thing of note is that I have had a couple of 'catastrophic failures' while
using PFCPro but that hardly seems likely to be related.

But thanks for your interest. Now I'll have to go and beat up my home
machine and see what happens there!

The only recent change has been to sync up my new iTouch (glory of
glories!!) with itunes - otherwise no changes.

However since writing the above my office computer has suddenly got over the
problem and is now working fine...leaving me (and I dare say you) none the
wiser. I have had a couple of 'catastrophic' (their word) crashes with
PFCPro but that hardly seems likely to be implicated. (No re-boot - just
crashed out of PPT).

Now I'll go and beat up my home computer and see if I can do anything to get
that working properly again.

Thanks for your suggestions. Let's hope it is a bizarre one off (or two
off).
