Custom Calendar Issue

I have a team who is creating custom calendars with their projects and then
importing the schedules into Server. When they do that they seem to be
losing their custom calendars. What can they do to keep the calendars?

The default settings in Project Server do not allow the use of local base
calendars in enterprise projects. If you wish to change this situation, you
will need to do one of the following:

1. Ask your Project Server administrator to create in the Enterprise Global
file the various kinds of calendars that your PM's need to use in their
projects.

or

2. Ask your Project Server to enable the local base calendar permission by
clicking Admin - Server Configuration in PWA and then selecting the "Allow
projects to use local base calendars" option.

Hope this helps.

Dale,

What are the impacts to the environment if you enable "allow projects to use
local base calendars"? I guess mainly you wouldn't be able to enforce any
standards?

Yes, you are correct. If you allow the use of local base calendars, then it
is difficult to enforce any type of calendar standards in your EPM
envirornment. I am a big advocate of not allowing the use of local base
calendars, and asking the Project Server administrator to create all
necessary calendars as enterprise calendars in the Enterprise Global file.
That is a good situation because it requires the Project Server
administrator to stay in close touch with the needs of his/her project
managers. Hope this helps.

Dale,

I actually gathered more information from my user. Here is the real problem:

1. The user is using a local calendar (we do allow local calendars in our
configuration)
2. The user opens multiple projects at one time which happen to be using
the same local calendar
3. MS Project renames the second project that was opened with the same
local calendar. This is the error - "There is a problem with the calendar
name. The project you are opening has local base calendar names that match
the names of the local base calendars in a currently open project. These
include: Perot Triad To preserve the calendars and scheduling, the
existing local base calendars in the project your are opening will be
renamed."
4. The user never gets an opportunity to say " No I dont want to rename my
local calendar" as the only option was "Ok"
5. The projects the user opened had externally linked tasks

Any thoughts? I saw another thread out here where a user had this problem
and the Microsoft thought the project had been corrupted.

Thanks,

The duplication of project calendars is usually one sign of project
corruption. I have seen this behavior dating back to Project 2000 when a
SQL Server database was used as a data repository for projects.

To eliminate the problem, the user should break all external links and then
save the project as either an .mdb file or an .xml file, and then delete the
enterprise project from the database. Then open the .mdb or .xml file and
save it as an .mpp file and close it. Finally, import it back into the
Project Server database using Tools - Enterprise Options - Import Project to
Enterprise. If this project has linked Risks, Issues, or Documents, refer
to the following FAQ for the steps the Project Server administrator should
follow to delete the project without deleting its SharePoint subweb:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/DeleteProjectWithoutSubweb.htm

Hope this helps.
