Custom Dictionary Not Available

Since I installed,I continue to get the subject line's error message whenever
I start word. It's really annoying. Has anyone else seen this/been able to
get rid of it?

Word expects a Custom Dictionary to be available. If you don't have one --
or if yours is corrupt -- just create a new one.

Someone could provide more specific information if you had given some idea
what version of the program on which operating system you happen to be
dealing with. If you're using a PC [this is the group for Mac Office] you'll
find the Win Office groups here:

Hi,

Really, I didn't post this question under a fake name just to plug my
new book. Here's an excerpt from the forthcoming book Microsoft Office
2008 All-In-One desk reference for Dummies by me and MVP Geetesh Bajaj:

Word has a great feature that comes turned off by default, and we need
to turn it on. The feature lets us add new words to a custom dictionary,
so that Office will learn new words as we work on our documents. Let’s
turn on our custom dictionary right now. You only have to do this once
and then the Spelling and Grammar Add feature will remain available to
you from now on not just in Word, but in all Office applications:

1. Choose Word@@-->Preferences, and open the Spelling and Grammar sheet
in the resultant window.
Word’s Spelling and Grammar preferences pane opens.
2. In the Spelling section, click the Dictionaries button.
The Custom Dictionaries window opens.
3. Click the Custom Dictionary checkbox.
4. Click OK to close Custom Dictionary.
5. Click OK to close Spelling and Grammar preferences.
Once you have performed the above steps, the Add button in Spelling and
Grammar becomes available, and the Add option becomes available in the
pop-up menu when you right-click or control-click on a word that’s been
flagged with a red squiggle.

If you found this tip helpful and want to read more like it, please
pre-order the book:

Thanks.

Word (and no other Office app) allow you to make separate Custom
Dictionaries to be used with different language settings (i.e. the different
language Dictionaries). But if you want your Custom Dictionary to be used
over all languages, then you should use only ONE custom dictionary in Word,
and have it set to "(none)" for language. Do not make the mistake of setting
it to your main language, just leave it (or reset it now) to "(none)". And
that's the one you should also use in Entourage's prefs.

It's possible it's looking to the wrong file. It used to be loose in the
Microsoft folder in Prefs....

"~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Custom Dictionary"

....but in Office 2008 it's in this location:

"~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Custom Dictionary"

See these links for some tips:

Thank you /diana for your help. I had all the settings as you suggest but I still get the same window popping up: Custom Dictionary not available.

Would re-installing Word help?

A re-install does not help in cases like this.

Remove your custom dictionary file and a new blank one should be created.
Can you select this one?

If no....

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. See if you can select
a dictionary file in this clean setting.
