Custom field edit

I made a new field called "referred by" on a second detail page I designed. Is there a way to change all the J's to JRS's in a field that I created? It is not a check box but maybe I need to make it one. I see that in the List View or once sorted by another field, though it looks like an Excel spreadsheet, it does not behave like one. I thought I could just type in one and copy it all the way down. Any Ideas? Thanks
I also want to make this form the default form for adding new contacts.
