Custom Field error - Project Server 2007

R

Rachel

I created a custom field in PWA and am now trying to insert the column into
the Gantt View in the client. I keep receiving the following error:

You cannot modify a table using the TableEdit method in a view that is not a
sheet view. Apply a sheet view, and then try again.

I haven't had this problem before. Does anyone know how to fix this? The
only view it will allow me to insert the column in is the Task Usage view.

Thanks,
Rachel

First, a question: Are you using a macro to add the column? "TableEdit
method" refers to VBA code.

Second, you don't add fields into a View. You add them to a Table displayed
in a View. Into which View have you attempted to add the field? It sounds
like you are trying to add the field into a View such as the Task Form,
which does not include a Table. Let us know and we will try to help.

Hey Dale,

Thanks for getting back to me. I am not using a macro to add the column. I'm
just right clicking and selecting insert column. I've tried adding the column
to the Gantt Chart View. I've been able to add them in them in the past (in
development) but in our production environment I'm getting errors. I'm
wondering if something was configured incorrectly. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Given the fact that I have never seen the error you describe, I will need
you to document the exact steps you have used that generated this error.
Let me know.

Dale,

I created an enterprise custom field in PWA by going to

Server Settings
Enterprise Custom Field
New Custom Field

and created a Task / Number field with no Lookup Table.

Then I went to the client and in the Gantt Chart view, right clicked on the
Entry Table to insert the custom field and received the following error

You cannot modify a table using the TableEdit method in a view that is not a
sheet view. Apply a sheet view and then try again.

The only view it will allow me to enter the column in is the Task Usage view.

Thanks for your help!

I cannot reproduce your error message, so I'm wondering what's going on with
your system. Beyond this, however, why are you adding this custom field to
the Gantt Chart view? To make this field visible to all of your project
managers, you need to do the following:

1. Click Tools - Enterprise Options - Open Enterprise Global.

The Enterprise Global is your organization's "library" of custom enterprise
Views, Tables, Filters, Groups, etc. You must open it for editing to create
custom enterprise Views, Tables, Filters, and Groups.

2. Apply the Enterprise Gantt Chart view, if not already applied. The
Gantt Chart view should NOT be selected in the Enterprise Global file!

3. Add the new column to the Enterprise Entry table.

I suspect that you have probably already "polluted" your Enterprise Global
file with non-enterprise Views such as the Gantt Chart view, so you will
probably need to do the following additional steps while you have the
Enterprise Global file open:

1. Click Tools - Organizer.

2. In the list of Views on the RIGHT (in the Enterprise Global file),
select and delete any local Views such as the Gantt Chart, Resource Sheet,
etc. You should only see ENTERPRISE Views in the list, such as the
Enterprise Gantt Chart, plus any custom enterprise Views you have created.

3. Click the Tables tab.

4. In the list of Tables on the RIGHT (in the Enterprise Global file),
select and delete any local Tables such as the Entry table. You should only
see ENTERPRISE Tables in the list, such as the Enterprise Entry table, plus
any custom enterprise Tables you have created.

5. On the Tables tab, select the Resource option at the top.

6. Select and delete any local resource Tables, such as the Entry table.

7. Click the Close button.

When finished with both of the above operations, save and close the
Enterprise Global file, then exit and relaunch Project Professional 2007.
Let us know if this helps.

I am also seeing this error.

However, I am only running Project 2007 stand-alone and all I am trying to
do is display the predecessors column

How in the world can you say you are seeing the same error, since the
original question is about an error message with Project Server 2007?

Because I am seeing it.
Period.
In my setup.

Can I upload a screen print??

The error message is identical even though there area number of significant
differences in my environment - specificaly

I am running Project 2007. Standalone.
I am only trying to view standard columns (predecessors, actual finish)

After I click OK on the error, I get a second dialogue box that claims

"The view or report cannot be displayed because the table "" on which it was
based has been deleted"

I have checked the view in the more views dialogue and can't see why there
is a problem

One of my colleagues has provided the solution

The view is a custom view - a modified Gantt
The table behind the view is somehow corrupt

I went to Tools Organiser, and, in the table tab, re-copied the table from
the template window to my project

That fixed my problem
