Custom Field-Finish Variance

R

Rhonda H.

I am trying to set the Graphical Indicator in Custom
Field. I want to use the Finish Variance field for
looking at schedule variances and I want to use graphics
when the "Finish Variance" is within a certain number of
days.
Using Enterprise Custom Field, I selected Enterprise
Number1 (renamed it to Schedule Variance), and then in the
fomula area I selected the field "Finish Variance" with no
other info. When I display the Schedule Variance the
number is no longer in days. For explain the "Finish
Variance" field will show 1 day variance and the "Schedule
Variance" shows 480. They should match.

Does anyone know if there is some calculation that I need
to do? Or, is there some other way to use the Graphical
Indicator without using the Custom Field option?
Thanks in advance.

It's not so hard. The information you lack is that all time values are
stored in Microsoft Project as minutes. So, the 1 day of Finish Variance is
actually 480 minutes of variance. Your formula needs to convert from
minutes to days. You can do so by writing the formula as [Finish
Variance]/480. This assumes that your Hours Per Day value is 8 (this is set
by clicking Tools - Options - Calendar). Hope this helps.

Good comment. Thanks for the additional thought!

Note that you can use [Minutes per day] or [Minutes per week] to convert.
This will take into account the cases where a day/ week is defined as
anything other than 8 hours/40 hours. It is good practice to use it instead
of dividing by 480.
