Custom field indicators

How do I use text instead of the graphical indicators in custom fields? I
did something like this but it didn't work.
IIf([Finish Variance]<0,"Ahead of Schedule",IIf([Finish
Variance]>0,"Late","On Schedule"))
Any ideas?

I had it in a number field. Thanks

Did you create this formula in a custom Text field? If not, and you created
it in any type of number field, it will generate an error. Hope this helps.
