Custom Field Problem

I have created a custom field called stat_date which I have added to
the tracking table and subsequently the all tasks view. The field
simply displays the status date using a formula
stat_date=[status_date]. for some reason it only works for some
records and not all. I need this field to display for all records. I
have never used project before so i am not sure the term records is
correct. Any help is appreciated.

Where does it get the value [status_date]? Is it an
entered field? Do all the records have a date entered?
Or does it get it from a database or another table in MS
Project?
