Custom Fields Between Local and Global Problem

F

Forrest

Product Version is a PS2003 Enterprise system.
My experience is limited.

I was using one of my projects to try out a Custom Field to make sure it was
working correctly. Once that was done I checked out my Enterprise Global,
then went back to the local project and opened the Organizer to copy the
Field into the Ent. Global. I got an error message that said, "Only
Enterprise Fields are customized and stored in the ent. global. Use Import
Custom Field or Import Outline Code to import definitions into the ent.
global."

Then I tried this by just checking out the ent. global and importing the
formula from the custom field in the local project but got another error
message..."The formula cannot be saved because it refers to a non-enterprise
custom field."

Then I tried to just check out the Ent. Global an create the Custom Field
directly instead of copying it. The Tools-->Customize-->Fields.. was grayed
out not allowing me to even make a Custom Field in the Enterprise Global.

I'm just trying to use a simple formula to show me a duration in days by
subtracting one date from another. ( Finish - Date1 )

You need to open the Enterprise Global for editing and then click Tools -
Customize - Enterprise Fields. Hope this helps.

I do this;
Tools-->Enterprise Options-->Open Enterprise Global and I see (Checked Out
Enterprise Global).
Then I do this;
Tools-->Customize-->Fields... and this is grayed out. Why?
Tools-->Customize-->Enterprise Fields... is not grayed out and I can access
this but that's where my problem begins.

There are columns in the Resource Sheet View that use Custom Fields, not
Enterprise Custom Fields. The Custom Fields are the ones I'm trying to use
in my formula within the Enterprise Custom Field but it won't let me do that.

Is there a way to do this?

You need to use custom enterprise fields in the Enterprise Global. After
you create your enterprise custom Resource fields in the Enterprise Global,
exit and relaunch Microsoft Project Professional. After that, you can add
your custom enterprise Resource fields to a custom Table that you can use in
the Resource Sheet view. If this doesn't answer your question, then perhaps
you need to explain what you are trying to do. Let us know.

Forrest:

You cannot save local custom fields to the Enterprise Global. The two are
mutually exclusive. You can use non-enterprise custom fields in the local
project only. If you want to use them in a consistent way across the
enterprise, then customize them in a template, and insist that everyone use
the template to begin new projects.
