Custom Fill Palette?

I find that there are not enough really pale colours in the fill palette. Is
there any way to customise the colours available, using Apple's Color
Picker? (I know that I can blend existing colours with white, using the
Pattern option, but I want to be able to save a palette with my own
colours.)

I think what you want can be found in

Excel > Preferences > Color > Modify

That's not the most obvious place for this particular setting IMHO.
Please don't feel badly about not finding it easily.
