Custom Footer in Theme can't be applied to existing presentation

I've created a custom theme. At the bottom of every layout alternative in
the master I have add a "copyright" footer or text box ( i tried both). When
I begin a new presentation and apply the theme, it works beautifully.
However, when I apply the theme to an existing presentation which previously
had a different theme applied to it, then I can see the new theme applies
properly, however the copyright info does not appear on the new slides.

Any ideas how to do this? I have dozens of presentations that I would like
to update with the new theme and the copyright info and can't figure out how
to do it.
