Custom formatting issue:

I am trying to recreate custom formatting created by a client in a Quattro
Pro file but I can't quite get it,
any assistance would be appreciated.
I have 2 cells which the client enters a value in one or the other, these
are multiplier or divisor values which
affect how the final account is calculated.

Multiplier - formatted as " N9.0' x' " in Quattro Pro.
Therefore if I enter 5 in the multiplier cell, it displays as 5.0 x and
other cell values are multiplied by 5.

Divisor - formatted as N'1/'9' x' in Quattro Pro.
Therefore if I enter 5 in the multiplier cell, it displays as 1/ 5 x and
other cell values are divided by 5.

In Excel, I have formatted the Multiplier cell as follows - "#.0 x"
This gives me the number displayed the way I want it and the formula in
adjacent cells works fine.

The Divisor is the one giving me the problems.... If I format the cell as
"1/# x", no matter what number I type in, the result I get displayed is 1/1
x when in reality I want to see 1/3 x or 1/5 x etc etc...

The double quotes displayed here are not in the actual formatting,
they are purely to show here exactly what is typed/displayed in Quattro or
Excel.

NOTE: The single quotes displayed in the Quattro Pro formatting are actually
there,
that's how Quattro separates the labels from values...I guess :)

If anyone can offer a suggestion as to how I can get this formatting right,
it would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Philip - this is not quite what you want, but perhaps it will do:

Try formatting your cell as: "?/? x"

Then you can use the same cell for multiplying or dividing. If you want to
divide you enter 1/5 or if you want to multiply you enter 5.

The first displays as 1/5 x
The second displays as 5 x

You can then do away with the divide cell altogether which must simplify
things a bit.
