custom maps

Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to save an import map.
I run through an import. And at the end I save the map. In the organizer I
can see my map name in the global.mpt.

then I search my HD for global.mpt. and nothing modified toay.
and if I run an import again, I do not see the map.

anything I am missing?
thanks

Hello greg,

There are usually at least two copies of the global.mpt file. The
one that is modified is usually in a hidden directory. On my
installation (US English) in XP Professional it is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Julie\Application Data\Microsoft\MS
Project\11\1033

The copy of the Global.MPT in C:\Program Files will not show a
recent modified date.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

If I close ms project. then open and import again. I no longer see my new

Why is that?
How o I really save the map, so it is available later?

Hello greg,

Custom maps should be being saved to your global.mpt file. If they
are not, I'd ask two questions:

1) Are you working in an environment where the global.mpt file is
read-only? I've worked with clients in the past who chose to make
everyone's global.mpt read-only. That meant that custom maps could
not be saved. You note that you can see the custom map in the
organizer. Have you tried copying that map to the local file?

2) Are you working with Project Server? I am not a server person
but I believe that server works with an Enterprise Global which you
may not have permissions to modify.

I do see my global.mpt file in
C:\Documents and Settings\...\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\12\1033
after i try and update the map, i see the file date has changed.
I am just using MS Project 2007. No project server.

Is there some special save to do at the end?
I even tried putting it to a project. and back. etc...
The new map does not want to stay.
any tricks?

thanks

Hi Greg,

No special save required at all. In Windows XP (with administrator
privileges) the map is automatically saved and is available when I
next run the wizard and select "Use existing map."

What OS are you using? Do you have admin rights?

Try copying the global.mpt file to another folder (say same folder whre
the project MPP file is kept). Then create a special startup shortcut
for project 2007 (copy the existing one onto your desktop). Change the
"start-in" folder to this new location.

Doing this will launch Project and it will use the "local" global.mpt.
That way you know where it goes and can check. You also can probably
more easily manage the permission issues which might be the problem. I's
also a great way to use different global.mpt files (which I do all the
time).

Hi greg,

Sorry, I cannot reproduce what you report. I am running Windows XP
SP3 and Project 2007 SP-2. I am certain I didn't have any trouble
before SP-2 either. Rob's suggestion may work for you -- but I
don't honestly know. If you note that the global.mpt file stored in
your user's directory is being changed (shows a current modification
date) and you can write to that directory, I don't have any idea why
the new map is not being saved.

You might try a detect and repair of the installation but make sure
you have the original media available for re-install should the need
arise.

Sorry I couldn't come up with a magic fix for you Greg. Let us know
if the detect and repair works.

Just an fyi
I tried the startup, but it did not fix the problem.
Also ran the diagnostic. Did not fix the problem.

However, I installed sp1. and now I am good.
