When you insert a Table of Contents, you MUST set the Format to "From
Template".
If you set it to anything else, your TOC styles are replaced every time the
TOC rebuilds. That's how the other formats happen, by replacing the TOC
styles.
You should never "edit" a TOC, because the whole thing is generated text
which will be deleted and replaced each time the TOC rebuilds.
Set your Format to "From Template" and then make the changes you need by
changing the TOC styles.
Hope this helps
Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) I took one of the
generated TOC's and changed the styles of the fonts, etc....Everything fell
into place, the headers and sub-headers all show up fine but when I make a
change to a heading on a page the table of contents does not update and when I
go into "index and tables" and check things they have been reset to the
default using the default Heading 1, 2 and 3 in the levels, even after I've
modified this... and when it asks if I want to update TOC and say yes...The
whole TOC defaults back to a preset style? how can I keep my new TOC and have
it update automatically or even easily?
