custom trendline confusion

I would like to generate a custom trendline on a graph, but I cannot find
any instructions for how to get the proper syntax, nor can I find what
functionality is possible with this feature.

All of my attempts to make a custom trendline have resulted in XL (XL 2000)
producing a simple linear fit trendline. Thanks in advance, Jay

When you select Chart|Add Trendline, you are given a choice of 6 basic
types of trendlines, most with additional options. Select something
other than the default "Linear", before you press OK.
