Custom View problem

K

kevs

I can't seem to get the custom view thing down.

I add a custom view. Then I hide a column. Then I close custom view, but
the column is still hidden. What did I do wrong. I thought after selecting
close, the column would then revert to its normal unhidden mode.

Also, How do you know you are in custom view? I don't see any flashing red
lights or anything to let you know you are now definitely in custom view.
Thanks.

Do you mean you closed the workbook? You can't close a custom view -
it's not a "state" to be open or closed.

Selecting a custom view sets the workbook to the the settings that the
workbook had when the custom view was saved. It doesn't retain any other
settings or history.

If you want a "normal" mode, create that as a custom setting.

Again, a custom view isn't a "state" of a workbook, so there's no
indication.

Excellent JE.
But still not there.
I made a custom view called normal view.
Then I made custom view called Custom view and in this view I hid some
columns.
When I go to normal view, everything is ok, but when I go back to custom
view, the columns are not hidden -- it's not sticking, it's just like normal
view. Don't know why.

The close was referring to the close in custom view box-- underneath show.

Is the "Hidden rows, columns and filter settings" checkbox checked?

That refers to the custom view dialog, not the view itself.

JE:
I can't tell you! I remember that check box but cannot tell you if I
checked it or not!

When I go back to custom views I only see:
SHOW, CLOSE, ADD, DELETE. There is no edit option to say what I chose.

HEY, I redid everything and got it to work. And you know what I see now on
the formatting toolbar, a dropdown that list custom views. I remember JE
saying in old post he makes his own toolbars for custom views. But with
dropdown, I would think that would now be unnecessary. Is this a new 2004
feature?

Hi, Kevs-

Let me see if I can help you out at all.

If you want to change between views, the best method to take is first
set your normal view.

Setting the normal view:
1. Set the page the way that you want it to look in any given
situation
2. Go to View->Custom View
3. Click "Add"
4. Type the name of the view "Normal" (Here you do have the option
for Print settings, and Hidden rows, columns, and filters to view. If
you had unchecked either or these, it might be causing the problems
that you are seeing.)

Setting Other views:
1. No set up any special settings you want, IE hiding rows and/or
columns
2. Follow the same steps above for Setting the view

Now, going between each view should work as you originally planned.

My guess is that you are seeing a problem with you columns not be
hidden, is because the check boxes were not checked and therefore are
not shown in the view that you have selected.

Hope this helps a little-

Thanks, yes it was that stupid checkbox. Strange though you can't edit it.
