custom views

The environment that I work in has been using Project as a stand alone
product, but will possibly be migratign to Project Server. Can we move our
custom vieew from Project to Project Web Access without having to manually
redo all of them?

You cannot migrate custom Views from Microsoft Project to Project Web
Access. The Project Server administrator will need to create custom PWA
views using the Adminstration interface in PWA. On the other hand, you CAN
migrate custom views created in standalone Microsoft Project to the
Enterprise Global file, so that you can distribute them to every user of
Microsoft Project Professional quickly and easily. If you do migrate to
Project Server, please return to this newsgroup and we will help you to
migrate your custom local Views, Tables, Filters, Groups, and Reports, as
needed. Hope this helps.

Thanks. We have set up Project Server & will be in a pilot phase. So, I'll
have to redo all of our Views, Tables, Filters from our standalone version?
Bummer. I also need to find out how to change the custom fields to
Enterprise fields. If we have to redo everything, the sponsor will not sogn
off on us purchasing this solution.

I believe your sponsor needs to rethink his/her position about signing off
on purchasing this solution. Going from standalone Microsoft Project to
Project Server is like night and day. If he/she thinks it is a simple
operation, he/she is sadly mistaken. This is why many companies hire a
Project Partner to assist with their Proect Server implementations.

If you want to move from standalone Microsoft Project to Project Server, you
will not have to redo everything, but the process will not be automatic
either. You will still need to create your own custom Views in PWA, but I
would suspect that most of the default PWA views will show you the
information you want to see. So that might not be as much work as you are
thinking. Also, you can reuse your custom Fields, Views, Tables, Filters,
Groups, and Reports from standalone Microsoft Project plans, but it will
involve a little bit of work on the Project Server administrator's part to
get them into Project Server.

Here's how to move custom Fields from standalone projects into Project
Server:

1. Launch Microsoft Project Professional and log into Project Server
2. Open a standalone project containing your standalone custom fields
3. Click Tools - Customize - Fields
4. Make a list of all the custom fields and outline codes in the project
for both Tasks and Resources and then click OK
5. Click Tools - Enterprise Options - Open Enterprise Global
6. Click Tools - Customize - Enterprise Fields
7. Select the field Type at the top of the dialog (either Task, Resource,
or Project)
8. Select an enterprise field that you want to import from a standalone
fields and rename it
9. Click the Import Custom Field button
10. Click the Project pick list and select the standalone project
11. Select the Field Type for the standalone project field
12. Click the Field pick list and select the custom field from the
standalone project
13. Click OK to import the custom field information from the standalone
project into the custom enterprise field
14. Repeat steps #7-13 for each custom enterprise field or outline code you
wish to import from a stand alone project
15. Save and close the Enterprise Global file, then exit and relaunch
Microsoft Project

That's how to do it. Hope this helps.
