Customer ID field?

I've just noticed that many of my contacts in a Public Contacts folder have
the "Customer ID" field (listed under "All Fields" tab, "Miscelleneous"
Section) filled in with random characters. Can anyone tell me what the
purpose of this field is and how it gets populated? I'm using Office 2000
Small Business Addition.
