Customize style list?

Is it possible to set the pull down menu list of styles so that the
style names are NOT formatted with the style they describe?

Is it possible to limit or reorder the styles that appear in the list.
I use maybe four or five styles 90% of the time, but they are about
half way down the list (past a bunch of default styles (e.g. Heading
1-5). It would be nice if you could place the most commonly used styles
at the top of the list, or exclude system styles that you don't use in
the document.

Hi Brian,

Your best bet is to create a custom toolbar (Tools> Customize) and put the
styles you use most often on it. You can also assign keyboard shortcuts to
these styles. You'll find much more about this and other methods for
working with styles if you read Clive Huggans's "Bend Word to your Will":

There's a single preference for " WYSIWYG font and style menus" in Word |
Preferences, General. Both or neither, I'm afraid.

I appreciate the suggestion and finally got around to learning how to
create a new menu. That's pretty slick. But when I look for a way to
add my styles to it, I can't find it. There is a "Styles" set of
command, but it lists only the system default styles, not my user
defined styles. Am I missing something? Or is there no way to add user
defined styles to a custom menu?

Thank.

When you go to Tools> Customize> Toolbars & Menus> Commands> Styles, your
custom (user-defined) styles *should* be available. I just ran a quick test
and had no problem.

When you go to Format> Style, do your custom styles show in the All-Styles
list?

What version of Word and the OS are you in?

I ran a quick test and noticed--though I never had before--that the Styles
you get in the dialog Beth specifies are the styles that are available in
the currently active template. It seems to be the same list as you would
see in the regular Style dropdown off the formatting toolbar. Your Normal
template is always open--to get access to styles kept elsewhere, first open
a doc based on that template (or the template itself).

If that's not it, don't forget to respond to Beth's questions.

Daiya's answer did the trick. The styles available in the command
customization list are the styles in the currently active document.
That solved my problem, thanks.

Yes: The styes must already exist in the document before they will show in
the menu :)
