Customized My Toolbars, Now They Don't Work

Aron Meltzner

I'm using Word for OS X. I decided to Customize my toolbars using the
Tools-->Customize menu option, and now, whenever I start up Word,
many of the buttons in the toolbar at the top of the screen are inactive
and are not clickable. Mostly, they're the ones I've added, but some of
them are included in the defaults. The following are examples of
buttons that I can no longer click on:

* Flag for Follow Up
* Print Preview
* Find
* Dictionary
* Align Left
* Formatting Palette (the button the makes the formatting palette pop
up)
* Drawing (the button that makes the Drawing toobar pop up)
* (plus a bunch of others that I added)

Interestingly, some of the buttons I added, that are not in the toolbar
by default, are clickable and do not have this problem.

The problem is solved instantly if I click on the Tools-->Customize
menu option (from then on, all the buttons are active and clickable),
but once I quit Word and restart, I have the same problem all over
again. I've restarted the computer and tried again, to no avail.

I suspect the problem has to do with Word being unable to find some
toolbar settings file, but I have not been able to pinpoint the problem.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Aron

Hi

Toolbar buttons are context sensitive. Some of the buttons will only be
active under certain circumstances.

If you are pretty sure they just aren't working properly you are on the
right track. Head to your UserName > Library > Preferences > Microsoft
folder and you'll find the preferences to delete. You have to delete them
(or rename them) with all Office applications turned off. If you go the
delete route, be sure to empty the trash before starting any office
applications. Preferences in the trash will still be used (unlike OS 9 and
earlier).
