Customized "picture" bullets erroring

G

Guest

I'm running MS Word 2008. When I try to select a picture as a custom bullet
option, I get the following error message:

"This application cannot open this file. This file is an unsupported graphic
format or may be damaged. Try opening the graphic in another application."

It's not a problem with the graphic because it won't work on the pics that
come with Word. I've tried JPEG, GIF and PNG just in case.

It also gives me the same error message when I click the "Cancel" button
instead of the "Insert" button.

I suspect that this is a bug. Does anyone know a work around?

I would say you've missed one or more of the updates.

It works fine here, in either GIF or JPEG. NOTE: MUST be 24-bit colour or
less (i.e. RGB, not CMYK pictures).

Use Help>Check for Updates and see if you're missing a service pack.

Cheers

I wish that were the case. I have it set to auto-update but I checked
anyway. It's up to date.

They are RGB and I've imported the same graphics into the file as regular
images. They only error when I try to import as a bullet.

Hi Joshua:

OK, I am fairly sure that one of the updates has failed to apply.

I suggest that you download the latest Apple combo updater and apply it,
then download the latest Microsoft service pack and apply that.

The symptom you have is absolutely classic for a bug that was cured in one
of the updates, which is why it works on my system.

Sorry: I haven't anything else I can suggest ...

I am having the same error as Joshua and I have got all the updates.
Anyone knows how I can fix this issue?

I've re-applied the latest Apple combo updater. I attempted to re-apply the
Microsoft updaters but they wouldn't work. Seems that they won't apply to a
newer version than they're programmed for.

In any case, the Mac OS update alone didn't fix the problem. Are you
suggesting that I would need to uninstall then reinstall Word, then apply
the updates to fix this problem?

Has anyone else had this problem or found a fix?

Hi Joshua:

Many people have had the problem, and the fix is what I told you. However,
in your case, we are going to have to go back further than the "latest"
Microsoft update (or, as you suggest, uninstall and re-install then
re-update the whole suite).

You are quite correct: Microsoft updates are very version-specific. They
won't apply to either an older or a more recent version than the one they
are made for.

I think you will need to re-run Service Pack 12.1.0, followed by 12.1.5.

The usual cause of this is that components of the Microsoft Office software
"go missing". This is often caused by utilities that try to "clean up" your
software by removing the parts you "don't need".

When you apply an update, the first thing it does is make a list of the
positions on your computer of all the files it intends to update. If it
can't find one, it then fails with an error message. Later updaters are
more forgiving, but they will still fall over if the software has been
altered or moved since it was installed.

Hope this helps
