Customizing Field Formats

I need to add dollar sign ($) to numerous cost fields to be displayed in
tables. What's the best way to do this?

What setting have you got in Tools/Options.../View tab for the Currency
Symbol?

Use a text field.
Insert an unused text field (insert menu/columns)
right click on header and choose customize
click on the formula button
enter a formula like this

"$" & [Cost]

Click OK.
In the summary area of the dialog box select "use formula"
Click OK.
