Cut and paste in Excel + processing

I am trying to do a simple cut & paste in Excel of numbers from one column to
another. After I click on copy, a "processing" bar appears on the status bar
and does not allow me to complete the paste.
Does anyone know how to turn off the processing? Thanks.
