cut and paste problem

G

Graham

If in Excel I cut some text and the open up Word and paste
the text in I
encounter a problem: the text has been replaced with a
small icon like
picture of what appears to be a mobile phone - although
it's that tidgy it
may be something else.

If I already have both Excel and Word open I have no
problem. It's only
when I cut (or copy), open an office program and then
paste.

Any ideas ?

Hi Graham,

It sounds like a third party add-in is replacing the Windows Clipboard
contents when you start Word. What version of Word are you using?

Hi Alan,

You could have a COM Add-in rather than an add-in loaded via the
Startup folders. (Bluetooth perhaps?)

Go to Help/About Microsoft Word and click System Info. Then navigate
the tree on the left to:

Office 10 Applications\Microsoft Word 2002\COM Add-ins

and check the list.

Also note you can access the newsgroups either using Google (just set
up an account) or use the web interface at:

Hi Beth,

Sorry about this being unsolicited, but I can't get onto the
newsgroups from work (though I can read them in the google groups).
I've got the same problem as Graham, who posted a couple of days ago -
the mobile phone icon appearing in Excel or Word when pasting. It too
only occurs when Word or Excel is opened after data has been copied.
I've checked clipboard viewer, and it's as you say - something is
replacing the contents when Word or Excel boots. However, I have _no_
third party add-ins installed... i'm running Office XP SP2. Any help
would be much appreciated.

Aaah, that's better - thanks Beth, I didn't know about the web interfaces to the groups

I've got a sneaky feeling that this is a bug to do with Bluetooth - if we can get Graham back here, or if someone else finds this discussion from a search for the same problem, we can confirm it. I'll try uninstalling the bluetooth kit and see what happens

Thanks

I don't know if it's the Belkin software specifically, or the bluetooth drivers in general, but once I uninstalled it the issue was a non-issue. I've submitted the bug via WISH, though if you have a fast track as an MVP (I couldn't find anything to do so from my MSDN account), by all means use it. I'll get in touch with Belkin now and let them know

Thanks again, Beth

Hi Alan,

More than likely their add-in is adding a menu or toolbar item and is
using the Clipboard to add the image. Of course this is unnecessary
since there are other techniques that can be used. Unfortunately many
third-parties (including Microsoft) do not understand why creating a
"well behaved add-in" is important to users.

More than likely the Bluetooth add-in is controlled by a DLL and you
should be able to use Bluetooth without the add-in for the Office
applications.

First check Add/Remove Programs and see if there is a separate listing
for the add-in.

If that doesn't work then download the Process Explorer from:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

- Start Word
- Run the Process Explorer utility
- In the upper pane select Winword.exe
- Locate the "View DLLs" command in the Toolbar (if you see View
Handles then View DLLs is already in use)
- In the lower pane see if you can locate DLLs for Belkin (there may
be more than one so hopefully the Description will help you out.)
- Locate the path for the DLL in a column on the right
- Once found exit Word and rename the DLL to prevent it from loading.

Note it is best to rename the file extension rather than the file
name.

Hi

I got the excact same problem on my Windows XP SP1 computer. I have a
Trust Bluetooth USB adapter, and the icon on my clipboard is the same
Icon found in the Send-To -> bloothooth menu in Word. Also I have a
COM Add-In called Send to bluethooth. So there is no doubt that this
is the problem. I have however not tried uninstalling the devcice, but
I'm sure it will solve the problem.
